CLASS RULES FOR ENGLISH SKILLS & ENGLISH II

English Skills, 2011-2012
Grading Policy

Mrs. Coleman/  Dr. deBeer

Overview:   The major objectives of this course include improving basic writing skills, research paper skills, and test-taking skills.   Specifically, we will review grammar, punctuation, writing with style, editing, vocabulary, and SAT and HSPA preparation.   The last marking period will be an introduction to English III: British Literature.  While some worksheets and prepared material will be reviewed, much of the learning will involve your own ideas and creativity. Vocabulary will be listed on www.quizlet.com -- vocabulary flashcards should be printed at home each week

Point System : This type of grading enables you to keep track of your progress over the course of each marking period.   Final marking period grades will be based on the total number of points earned divided by the total number of possible points.

The following weight will be given to each type of assignment:

            In-class Journal Assignments:                             5-10 pts.

            Tests & Quizzes:                                                20-100 pts.

            Written Assignments:                                        25-100 + pts.

Class Participation and Citizenship : You are required to come to class prepared each day with the appropriate materials (notebook, pen, pencil, etc.) and make a positive contribution to the class work/discussion.   Everyone is required to treat all class members with respect, even if the discussion is controversial.

Late work The English Department's policy is that work must be handed in by the due date for full credit.  If it is a day late, the score will drop a full letter grade. If it is more than a day late, a minimum of 50% will be deducted.  After four days, it will be a zero.  See Mrs. McDonald or Mrs. King for questions.

Missed Assignments :   If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up missed work within a day or two of the missed class.   You need to discuss this with your instructor.   If the make-up date has passed, you will receive a zero for that assignment.

Materials: You should purchase a notebook with pocket folders.   These folders are key to keeping track of the various papers you will receive.   Also bring writing utensils & charged lap top.

Journal:   Every class member will be given a blank journal.   Everyone, including the teacher, will use the journal to write ideas, drafts, and responses.   Aspects of the journal will be graded.

Class rules:

Treat each other with respect.

Bring necessary materials to class.

Arrive to class ON TIME and be seated.

If it is vital to leave the room, obtain a hall pass and return promptly.

English II, 2011-2012

Grading Policy

Dr. deBeer

Overview:   In this course, we will explore American literature.   By viewing the literature historically, we will analyze how American literature evolved.   Our reading will include Native American myths, American Revolutionists essays, The Crucible Huckleberry Finn, To Kill A Mockingbird , The Great Gatsby , The Catcher in the Rye, and either Black Boy , The Bean Trees , or The Joy Luck Club, as well as many shorter works of various genres.   Themes include many issues we grapple with today: loyalty, honesty, family-life, racism, sexism, and spirituality.    While reading these works is central to the class, writing, oral presentation, critical thinking, and even artwork will be emphasized as tools for our discussion and analysis.   Review work and vocabulary will be listed on www.quizlet.com.

Point System : This type of grading enables you to keep track of your progress over the course of each marking period.   Final marking period grades will be based on the total number of points earned divided by the total number of possible points.

The following weight will be given to each type of assignment:

Quizzes (vocab and other):                              10 to 50 pts.

            Tests:                                                                50-100 pts.

            Written Assignments:                                       20-100 + pts.

            Projects and papers:                                         100+ pts.

Class Participation and Citizenship : You are required to come to class prepared each day with the appropriate materials (notebook, pen, pencil, etc.) and make a positive contribution to the class work/discussion.   Everyone is required to treat all class members with respect, even if the discussion is controversial.   Good preparation will make our discussion more interesting and fulfilling for all of us!

Homework:    This class requires students to read at home. While some reading will be completed in class, expect to read many of the longer works at home.   Reading quizzes or reaction papers will be given regularly, often without warning.   Writing tasks are also often given for homework, although most writing tasks are begun in class.   You will be expected to finish most drafts at home, with the exception of essay tests.  Since the district is giving you a lap top, you are expected to type papers and use MLA citation correctly.

Written Assignments :   We write to think, to create, to share.   Of course, some writing will be graded, but some writing will facilitate class discussion, group work, and brainstorming. Be prepared to share!

Missed Assignments :   If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up missed work within a day or two of the missed class.   You need to discuss this with your instructor.   If the make-up date has passed, you will receive a zero for that assignment.   If you were not absent and you did not hand in an assignment, you will receive a zero.

Materials: You should purchase a large notebook with pocket folders or a binder with lined paper and pocket folders.   These folders are key to keeping track of the various papers you will receive.   Also bring writing utensils, preferably blue or black pens, as well as a charged lap top. .
